I’m confident “Sunrise” has prepared Brittany for great things ahead.Attempts to change Hawaii’s film incentives sparked a feud between Senate leaders and the manager of the Hawaii film office. Each person changes the show, and the show changes each person. Whoever works in the same position next will be different. But every manager who is not a witling knows that the truth is the opposite. Managers often say no one is irreplaceable. While I haven’t named all the personnel who make “Sunrise” happen – including such shy people as Melanie who runs TelePrompTer and Gail to fixes what’s broken and Byron who positions the cameras and Ian who writes the Web content and producer Josh and guest producer Chimaine and John and Joel and Paul who shoot and edit our video and Dennis and the crew back in Master Control – I hope you get the idea that a lot of people put “Sunrise” together and they’re pretty special. He brings so much wit and intelligence to sound production that we extend unusual latitude to him to play whatever he thinks will work, including the sound effects that appear from out of nowhere. Peter was also with us from the early days, left for another challenge, but then returned.Ĭraig Kaleikini, the sound producer for the show, is another key player. Peter Chien is the technical director, the person who physically pushes the buttons to make things appear on the air. Sitting to Michael’s left is someone else who is really important to the show. He was directing the morning news at KHON when I was on it, before moving to PBS Hawaii where he and I co-created what came to be known as “Everybody’s Business.” (Leslie Wilcox named it when I left Pacific Business News and the original name “PBN Friday” didn’t work any more.) The director calls the camera shots and supervises the look of the program. Michael Harris and I were the first two people hired from outside KGMB for the show, and we had worked together twice before. Two former traffic people moved to other stations in the market, as did Scott’s original producer Anna Gomes, whom we still see at Gridiron every other year. Our original executive producer, Scott Humber, who created the format and nurtured the personal chemistry we have, was promoted to assistant news director and remains physically present most mornings. The best part of Grace’s return was that her successor, Tannya Joaquin, with whom I had worked previously at KHON, did not leave but merely moved to evenings where we still get to work with her. Grace Lee spent a year and a half in San Francisco but grew homesick for Hawaii and returned to us. Dan Cooke succeeded Jeff Booth when Booth moved back to Ohio so his kids could be near their grandparents.

In the six years “Sunrise” has been on the air, there have been staff changes, but remarkably few by the standards of broadcasting, where working some places for two years can make you one of the more senior people. Managing ad-libbers like Ramsay Wharton and Dan Cooke and me is cat-herding at its finest, Brittany was good at it, and we will miss her. – plugging in stories for the anchors until the show started at 4:30 a.m., then “boothing,” which means, she sat in the control room next to director Michael Harris, talking into our ears, telling us when we were on and where to stand and when to wrap up what we were saying.
